Ethiopia's gold mines, historically vital to its rulers, face new challenges from armed bandits known as 'Shiftas,' who acquired modern firearms after the Italian military's dissolution in 1941. The Shakiso mine in Sidamo is particularly affected. Following World War II and the return of Emperor Haile Selassie, the mine flourishes under a new expatriate manager, leading to increased productivity and regular shipments of gold bullion to Addis Ababa, despite the ongoing threat of raids.
