Independence in Old Age - Older German Women Living Alone

The study delves into the experiences of independent living among older German women, revealing that their perceptions of independence are shaped by internal mental factors, external environmental influences, and individual backgrounds. Interviews with 24 women aged 68 to 88 highlight that psychological aspects of independence often outweigh physical capabilities. The research identifies various facilitating and constraining factors, along with unique coping strategies, contributing to a nuanced understanding of independence that challenges existing literature focused primarily on physical functioning.
