IUU Fishing Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated. A critical reflection on different approaches to combating these acts and their effectiveness

The essay addresses the growing concern over Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and its detrimental effects on global fish stocks, highlighting a critical situation where nearly 33.1% of stocks were overfished by 2018. It underscores the pressing need for international action to combat IUU fishing, referencing data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that illustrates the escalating crisis. This work is part of a course on Maritime Environmental Law at Göteborg University and reflects the urgent legal challenges in marine conservation.
