Job, a prisoner on the Isle of Patmos, opens the door with an inaugural vision and the writing of seven letters. Their contents are given in a kaleidoscopic and psychedelic manner with unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism. Each turn of the scope presents new pictures, new scenes, done with a style and technique so dramatic that at times there seems to be a clashing of symbols. Western literature has a theme, developed point by point in a logical fashion, that dissolves in a climax, followed by a conclusion; not so with the Semitic-Oriental. The problem and its resolution are given at the beginning, and the message is traced and retraced in a concentric spiral to tell the story, with rich and lightened imagination. The book has no plot, no apparent order in its episodes, with interludes that explain the conceptual symbols. It deals with the end time - the Parousia - and the last attempts of Satan and his agents to destroy God's work. It concentrates on one aspect of God's character - that of righteous judgment and wrath against those who remain hostile and antagonistic toward him.
