This is a first-hand account of growing up on one of three adjoining family ranches in east- central New Mexico during the 1940s and '50s. These ranches were obtained via the homestead act, beginning in the mid 1920s. Much toil and effort was necessary to establish them as viable sources of livelihood. Three generations of Payne Family members pressed forward with grit and determination to make a success of these ranching endeavors while creating a civilized and unique life-style for those that followed. The adjoining ranches eventually covered a sprawling land area of around thirty square miles. While it is true that the foundation had been laid by those who preceeded her, the author was very much involved in the day-to-day workings of her family's life there. It was a sometimes nearly unbearable existence, with just as many touches of splendor. All aspects of this interesting life are explored, from everyday household and ranch routines, to vivid descriptions of the difficulties and rewards of dealing with animals and their peculiar traits as well as those of nature in general. Many prized photos are used to make the story come to life in a nostalgic and realistic way.
