Sir Peter Scott has achieved fame as a painter of wildlife, as the founder of the Wildfowl Trust, and as one of the world's leading conservationists. These three spheres of activity reflect a career in which two roles - that of the artist and that of the scientist - have been happily combined. 'Art and science', says Sir Peter, '...have been twin preoccupations all my life'. This book is a collection of paintings and a self-portrait of the man who created them. Many of Sir Peter's finest works are here reproduced, along with some fascinating pages and sketches from his notebooks, while in the text he talks about his career as a painter, his work with the Wildfowl Trust, his efforts to save the earth's national heritage from destruction from man, and the travels and encounters he has had the fortune to enjoy - including his recent visit to China. The 105 paintings and drawings in this book span a continuing career of over 40 years - from 1937 to 1980 - and include paintings made all over the world, of other animals as well as birds. They are complemented by a series of extended captions describing their settings and their zoological backgrounds. Here again the artist and the scientist are combined, for behind the paintings is a lifetime of patient, scientific observation. And behind the observation is the author's love of the beauty of nature, and his passionate conviction that man, as part of nature, must learn to live in harmony with it.
