Magrittes Mutter nimmt sich 1912 das Leben, ein Ereignis, dass zu einem immer wiederkehrenden Motiv seiner Bilder werden soll. Mit der Malerei hat der junge Mann keinen leichten Weg gewählt. Magritte schlägt sich als Musterzeichner in einer Tapetenfabrik durch, später als Plakatzeichner – da hat er schon mit der zwei Jahre jüngeren Georgette eine Familie gegründet. Erst als er einen Vertrag mit der Galerie »Le Centaure« abschließt, kann er sich vollständig der Kunst widmen. Zu dieser Zeit entsteht auch sein erstes surrealistisches Bild: »Der verlorene Jockey«. Magritte freundet sich mit André Breton, Joan Miró, Hans Arp und später auch Salvador Dalí an, wobei es immer wieder zu Streitigkeiten und Zerwürfnissen kommt. 1947 stellt Magritte zum ersten Mal in New York aus, 1956 gewinnt er den Guggenheim-Preis für Belgien. Mit Vorwürfen des Ausverkaufs seiner Kunst konfrontiert, stirbt Magritte am 15. August 1967 in seiner Brüsseler Wohnung. Das letzte Bild bleibt unvollendet. René Magrittes künstlerisches Schaffen gilt als einer der wichtigsten Beiträge zum Surrealismus. Mit Werken wie »Das ist keine Pfeife« oder »Der Verrat der Bilder« möchte Magritte die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Wirklichkeit aufzeigen, mit »Die verbotene Reproduktion«, das Unerwartete im scheinbar Vertrauten sichtbar machen. Neben einer Auswahl der großen Werke Magrittes finden sich in diesem Buch eindrückliche Illustrationen von Iker Spozio.
