Maria Nefeli znamená „Marie Mrak“. Obě jména mají mytologické konotace. V mé básni je však Marie mladá žena, současná moderní radikálka. Mé básně obvykle vycházejí z osobní zkušenosti, přesto ale nepopisují přímo žádné skutečné události. Marie Mračná tvoří výjimku. Když jsem dokončil Hodno jest (to bylo před šestnácti lety), potkal jsem tu mladou ženu v reálném životě a okamžitě jsem chtěl napsat něco velmi odlišného od Hodno jest. Proto jsem tuto mladou ženu nechal ve své básni promlouvat a vyjadřovat její vnímání světa, jež je vlastní mladé generaci. Nejsem proti ní, snažím se pochopit její pohled na svět a pohled její generace. Pokouším se jí porozumět tím, že nás oba nechávám mluvit v paralelních monolozích. – Odysseas Elytis Vydání sbírky doprovází dva další texty. První z nich vznikl na základě rozhovoru s Ivarem Ivaskem z roku 1972 a Elytis v něm hovoří o své poezii. Druhý je Elytisovým projevem, který přednesl francouzsky ve Stockholmu u příležitosti udělení Nobelovy ceny za literaturu v roce 1979, již získal rok po vydání poémy Marie Mračná.

Die 21 Träume (aus 'Anichtá Chartiá', 'Offene Karten', Athen 1974) hat Elytis selbst aus seinen 30 Jahre umspannenden Traumprotokollen ausgewählt und zu einem dreiteiligen Traum-Stück komponiert. Das Thema der Loslösung von der Familie und der Selbstfindung als Dichter erscheint in vielerlei Brechungen (auch in sieben 'Fragmenten'), am schönsten im symbolreichsten Traum 'Borianna', der mit dem Symbol 'Dreizack und Delphin' auch eine tiefe Sinnbeziehung zu Elytis' Hauptwerk 'To Axion Esti' aufweist. Elytis, der nach heftigen inneren Kämpfen in radikaler Abkehr von der Familie und jeder brotberuflichen Tätigkeit sich nur seinem dichterischen Schaffen widmete, offenbart in seinen Träumen, dass sein Beruf eine in ihm angelegte Berufung war, der er sich nicht entziehen konnte und wollte. Die 21 Träume charakterisieren, wie der Übersetzer und Interpret Günter Dietz aufzeigt, nicht nur den Dichter und seine Epoche, sondern bieten auch dem trauminteressierten Leser eindrucksvolle Beispiele für symbolische Traumarbeit und für das Einwirken eines 'Höheren Selbst'.

Ve své poezii, okouzlené sluncem a světlem řecké přírody, Elytis záměrně narušuje tradiční gramatiku a syntaktickou strukturu a sbírky veršů zpravidla doprovází vlastními fotografickými kolážemi.

Odysseas Elytis' Werk ist im deutschen Sprachraum vor allem durch die Suhrkamp-Bände bekannt. Der fünfte Band "Ox petra" (1991) gilt als Höhepunkt seines Schaffens und thematisiert einen positiven Tod, der mit Unendlichkeit verbunden ist. Zudem enthält er Elegien, die sich mit der Übersetzung des Nicht-Sagbaren beschäftigen.
