Vermander revisits the encounter between Chinese and Western philosophy, questioning the current approach to "comparative philosophy." The traditional view in intellectual history posits "Western thought" as substantialist, prioritizing individual autonomy while relegating "relations" and "processes" to a lesser status. In contrast, Chinese thought emphasizes the fluidity of phenomena and life forms, adapting to overarching patterns. This critique serves as a foundation for exploring what style of cross-cultural philosophical engagement should be encouraged today. Such dialogue is essential for reviving philosophies that are both local and genuinely dialogic.
