Unter Osseointegration versteht man eine direkte strukturelle und funktionelle Verbindung zwischen geordnetem, lebendem Knochen und der Oberfläche eines lasttragenden Implantats. Derzeit gilt ein Implantat als osseointegriert, wenn keine fortschreitende Relativbewegung zwischen dem Implantat und dem Knochen, mit dem es in direktem Kontakt steht, auftritt. Ein direkter Knochenkontakt, wie er histologisch beobachtet wird, kann auf das Fehlen einer lokalen oder systemischen biologischen Reaktion auf diese Oberfläche hinweisen. Es wird daher vorgeschlagen, dass Osseointegration nicht das Ergebnis einer vorteilhaften biologischen Gewebereaktion ist, sondern eher das Fehlen einer negativen Gewebereaktion. In diesem Buch sollen die grundlagenwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zum Konzept der Biologie der Osseointegration ausgewertet und die spezifischen Faktoren erörtert werden, die mit der Knochenheilung um ein Implantat herum zusammenhängen können.

Eine Mutation des p21-Gens kann die Expression des Proteins verhindern, was zur Entwicklung von Krebszellen führt. Für die Untersuchung wurden spezifische Mauszelllinien gewählt, und verschiedene Analysemethoden wie Immunfluoreszenz und Western Blot kamen zum Einsatz. Diese Studie ist Teil eines umfassenderen Projekts am Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre und erfüllt die Standards des Institutional Review Board.
