Marc Aurel ist im Jahre 121 n. Chr. in Rom geboren und war von 161 bis zu seinem Tod 180 römischer Kaiser. Er ist in die Geschichte als »Philosoph auf dem Kaiserthron« eingegangen, als der letzte Stoiker der Alten Welt. Die längste Zeit seiner neunzehn Jahre währenden Herrschaft verbrachte er im Heerlager, um die Barbarenstürme abzuwehren, die das Römische Reich erschütterten. Dabei half ihm die Philosophie, Ruhe und inneren Frieden zu bewahren. Mit seinem Tod endete für das Römische Reich eine Zeit der weitgehenden Stabilität. Das Reiterstandbild auf dem Kapitol in Rom und die Markussäule auf der Piazza Colona erinnern bis heute an sein Wirken.
