Regimental History

History of 2/6th Bn. Queen's Royal Regt. in the Italian Campaign
    The Rifle Brigade 1939-45: Volumes 1 & 2
    • 2023

This is a Regimentally published title that follows the Rifle Brigade and its exploits throughout the Second World War. Compiled by appropriate officers of the regiment, this is a day-to-day account of men in battle. Of a more intimate Regimental Chronicle style than the work of Major Hastings, it pleases with the first-hand telling of the Regiment's achievements narrated by seasoned officers who were in the thick of the fighting, from the dark days of the Defence of Calais in 1940, through the Western Desert and Tunisia, and on to North West Europe and the pursuit over the Rhine into the heart of Germany. For convenience we have bound both volumes of this history into one binding. A full listing of Honours and Awards, many with citations, fills pages 55-174 in Volume 2.

This is the story of the 2/6TH Bn. QUEEN'S ROYAL REGT fighting with determination against a formidable foe in the form of the German Army. From its arrival in Italy during the main invasion of Italy at SALERNO on 9 September 43, it continued applying pressure on the withdrawing Germans through to the hour of victory in Venice. It relates how the battalion, and it's Rifle Companies, fought and where. The 2/6th was engaged on the VOLTURNO CROSSING, at the SENIO POCKET and GOTHIC LINE, then at COMACCHIO, making its final move to TO VENICE and Victory in 1945. Very readable, and a useful history of a fierce and bitter campaign. Roll Of Fallen Officers and list of H&A to all ranks completes this title. It forms part of our ongoing series of Histories of the Second World War, that were originally published very shortly after the surrender of Germany, and whilst the events described were fresh in the minds of the compilers.
