      The Annunciationist follows an American painter, Martin, who is captivated by the significance of Annunciation paintings, particularly the relationship between Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. He is intrigued by the message, "You have in your womb an infant," and the forbidden intimacy surrounding the Virgin, reflecting his own experiences with unattainable women. This obsession drives him to explore Annunciation artworks across Europe. During his travels, Martin finds inspiration for his own paintings, frequently returning to the Greek island of Santorini, where he stays at his friend Orlando Pettingill's villa. His journey includes a relationship with a fallen-away nun in Assisi, resulting in the birth of a son. He also visits an Eastern Orthodox Romanian monastery, where he forms a platonic bond with a young nun whose mother was murdered by dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. This nun participates in one of his paintings. Additionally, he connects with an American flutist, whose mother was a model for sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, leading to another child and an Annunciation painting. Ultimately, Martin completes three Annunciation paintings featuring his models, which are displayed in a stunning white stone gallery overlooking the Aegean Sea, long after his unexpected demise.
