In the early days of World War II, as Nazi Germany invaded and occupied countries across Europe, hundreds of Norwegian police officers were ordered to carry out the commands of the Nazi occupiers. They refused, even under threat of death, leading to their imprisonment and eventual transfer to KZ-Stutthof in eastern Poland, part of a network of concentration and death camps primarily for Jews and Poles. Author Tore Jørgensen's father was among these officers. This book recounts the experiences of these heroes, highlighting their struggle to maintain national pride and order in Norway before their expulsion and their fight for survival amidst mental and physical exhaustion in detention. Over 22 years, Jørgensen collected numerous diaries and memoirs from these police officers, documenting their experiences. These accounts reveal how personal sacrifice can triumph over greed and violence, celebrating the redemptive power of conscious choice against evil and the compassion that can help individuals endure the darkest times. Their stories serve as a reminder to avoid repeating the history that led to the rise of Nazism.
