Toward the end of 1864, in response to Native American attacks on white settlers, Kit Carson was ordered to lead a contingent of 13 officers and 246 enlisted men against the Comanche and Kiowa tribes, who were believed to be wintering on the south side of the Canadian River. This account of the battle near Adobe Wells, Texas, is narrated by Capt. George H. Pettis, a member of Carson's command. The original manuscript is enriched with additional information about the Kiowa, Comanche, and Kiowa-Apache peoples, as well as insights into Carson himself. The book features three illustrations: portraits of Carson and Pettis, along with a photograph of the Adobe Walls area. Eleven additional illustrations have been included, such as maps of tribal territories and portraits of various tribe members, with five in full color. This e-book is a true representation derived from a high-definition scan of a pre-1923 print version, avoiding the common errors associated with Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Any typographic, spelling, or grammatical errors deemed to have minimal impact on comprehension have been preserved, ensuring the e-book remains as faithful to the original annotated text as possible.
