Fjodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski wurde am 11. November 1821 in Moskau geboren und starb am 9. Februar 1881 in St. Petersburg. Er entstammte einer verarmten Adelsfamilie, sein Vater war Arzt. Nach dem Tod seiner Mutter 1837 ließ sich Dostojewski mit seinem Bruder Michail in St. Petersburg nieder, wo er von 1838 bis 1843 an der Militärakademie Bauingenieurwesen studierte. 1844 begann er mit den Arbeiten zu seinem 1846 veröffentlichten Erstlingswerk Arme Leute . Dieser Roman machte ihn zusammen mit Der Doppelgänger , der ebenfalls 1846 erschien, schlagartig berühmt. Zu seinem Hauptwerk zählen unter anderem die Romane Schuld und Sühne aus dem Jahr 1866, Der Idiot (1868) und Die Brüder Karamasow (1880). Dostojewski ist ein zentraler Vertreter des Realismus innerhalb der russischen Literatur und gilt neben Lew Nikolajewitsch Tolstoj als bedeutendster russischer Schriftsteller. Hermann Röhl, geboren 1851 in Wittstock und verstorben 1923 in Naumburg, war ein deutscher Übersetzer, der viele klassische russische Werke ins Deutsche übertrug.
