Mitte der 1950er-Jahre eroberte Yves Klein (1928-1962) die Kunstwelt und erklärte: „Eine neue Welt erfordert einen neuen Menschen.“ Sein idiosynkratischer Stil und sein ungeheures Charisma verliehen seiner kurzen Karriere außergewöhnlichen Elan: In nur sieben Jahren produzierte er über 1000 Bilder , die heute als Klassiker der modernen Kunst gelten. Klein machte sich vor allem durch große monochrome Leinwände in einem besonderen, von ihm patentierten Blauton einen Namen. Das Internationale Klein Blau , bestehend aus reinem Pigment und Bindemittel, ist satt und leuchtend, tiefgründig und dekorativ zugleich. Der Künster wollte damit die Materiallosigkeit und Unendlichkeit der Welt heraufbeschwören. Klein war auch bekannt als Pionier gewagter Maltechniken. So setzte er „lebende Pinsel“ ein, nackte Frauen, die in Internationales Klein Blau getränkt auf großen Papierbögen Abdrücke ihrer Körper hinterließen. Diese sogenannten Anthropométries wurden oft als ausgeklügelte Performances aufgeführt, zu denen man blaue Cocktails reichte oder Kleins Komposition Monotone Symphonie spielte.
