Nicolas Bourriaud ist ein führender Kurator und Kunsttheoretiker, der maßgebliche Kunstströmungen definiert hat. Sein einflussreiches Buch „Relational Aesthetics“ wurde zu einem prägenden Text für eine Generation europäischer Künstler der 1990er Jahre. Bourriaud erforscht die zeitgenössische Kunst durch Konzepte wie „Postproduktion“ und beschreibt Künstler, die mit bereits bestehenden kulturellen Formen arbeiten. Er befasst sich auch mit dem Aufkommen einer globalen Moderne, die auf Übersetzung und nomadischen Formen basiert, und stellt diese der postmodernen Ästhetik entgegen, die auf Identitäten beruht.
Mit Radikant setzt Nicolas Bourriaud seine Analyse und Beschreibung der zeitgenössischen Kunst und ihrer sozialen Relationalität, die er mit seinen Büchern Relational Aesthetics [1998] und Postproduction [2000] begann, fort. Den aus der Biologie entlehnten Begriff des „Radikanten“ nutzt er eine als paradoxale Denkfigur, die einen Bogen von der Radikalität der Moderne über die Rhizomazität der Postmoderne schlägt.

Die Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Stuttgart wird von einem Katalog begleitet, der die verschiedenen Entwicklungsphasen darstellt, Majerus’ Œuvre in einen größeren kunsthistorischen Zusammenhang einordnet und sein Werk vor dem Hintergrund der globalen Bilderflut analysiert.
