Selbstbewusst suchte sie den Kontakt zu Scheichs und Stammesführern, unter deren Schutz es ihr gelang, zwischen den rivalisierenden Stämmen hin und her zu reisen. Sie lauschte den Geschichten von Scharfhirten, saß mit Soldaten am Lagerfeuer, in den schwarzen Zelten der Beduinen und den Besuchszimmern der Drusen. Sie überschritt geographische und soziale Grenzen, setzte Konventionen außer Kraft, denn „die englischen Frauen sind sonderbar. Auf der einen Seite sind sie vermutlich die größten Sklavinnen der Konventionalität.
