Kayaking the Inside Passage: A Paddler's Guide from Puget Sound, Washington, to Glacier Bay, Alaska
    • The memoir intricately weaves personal family narratives with significant historical events, focusing on Cuba, exile, and the Bay of Pigs. Divided into three distinct yet complementary sections, it offers a unique perspective reminiscent of John McPhee's work, drawing connections between personal experiences and broader historical contexts. The author’s trans-island bike journey serves as a backdrop for exploring themes of identity, belonging, and the impact of political upheaval on individual lives.

Closing the Circle: A Memoir of Cuba, Exile, the Bay of Pigs, and a Trans-island Bike Journey
    • New advances in understanding the generation of cell diversity in the developing vertebrate nervous system are presented, bringing together different perspectives and approaches as well as the use of different biological systems under a general theme. As a result, the reader is able to draw from a vast resource of information. In addition to studies on development, some articles concentrate on disease and allow direct comparison of the molecular mechanisms implicated in both development and disease. Developmental neuroscientists who are interested in neural cell fate determination as well as people working in areas of neural disease such as multiple sclerosis will profit most from this issue.

      Discovering My Father's POW Diary

      • 258 Seiten
      • 10 Lesestunden

Robert Miller's father, World War II veteran Herbert Henry Miller, died in 1994. A month later, Robert and his mother discovered the Red Cross diary he had kept while a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany. It became the catalyst for Robert's quest to learn more about his father's war. The result of that quest is this remarkable book, a story of terror, horrific despair, and Nazi depravity. But it is also a tale of survival against astonishing odds, of the deep bonds that develop between men at a time of war, and of choosing to leave hate behind. Captured by the Germans at Mortain, France, on August 6, Miller endured a punishing fifty-four-day march to Moosburg, Germany, where he survived for seven months in Stalag VIIA, the largest POW camp in Nazi Germany. During his stay at Stalag VIIA, Miller became good friends with a Nazi guard named Heinz, who eventually disappeared from the camp.
