About the Content The retail landscape of booming emerging countries is determined by a continually growing number of shopping centres. Thereby in those countries, an enormous structural change is furthered what has impacts on both the supply and the demand side. Therefore, Malaysia and especially its capital Kuala Lumpur is a good case study. Until now, there were no studies deeply analysing the shopping centre industry in Malaysia. Insofar this dissertation is a pioneer work which brings light to the shopping centre industry by comprehensive and laborious primary research. The academic target of this thesis is the description and analysing of the supply and demand structure of Malaysian retailing. On the one hand, 59 shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur were visited. 8,994 outlets were counted in the malls and classified by size and sector. On the other hand, 500 consumers were interviewed about their usual shopping behaviour in three different shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur. Furthermore, all existing shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur were valuated by an own qualitative model in order to define and to position different types of shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur on a retail life cycle. About the Author Alexander Knuppertz is born in Munich and studied financial services at the University of Applied Sciences in Aschaffenburg. During this time, he studied for one semester at the HEC management school of the University of Liege in Belgium. His first contact to Malaysia was in 2003: he did an internship at the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce in Kuala Lumpur. After successfully completing his studies in business administration in Aschaffenburg, he worked as a trainee for six months at RREEF Real Estate, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank. In January 2005, he started his doctoral thesis about shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur at the geography department of the Humboldt University of Berlin. Since November 2007, he is junior consultant for the investor relations department of Dr. ZitelmannPB. GmbH, a leading communication consultancy for real estate companies in Germany.
