Young lawyer Georg Polger leaves his comfortable life in Germany to become a freelance translator in a quaint village in the South of France. However, business is slow, and he struggles financially. His fortunes change when Mr. Bulnakov approaches him to take over a local translation agency after the previous owner dies under suspicious circumstances. Georg finds love with Bulnakov's secretary, Francoise, and engages in a lucrative project translating military helicopter plans. However, things take a dark turn when Georg discovers Francoise copying his work. She reveals that Bulnakov has threatened her brother in Poland if she doesn't comply. After confronting Bulnakov, Francoise vanishes, and Georg faces pressure from mysterious village forces. The only clue he has is a photo of a church she claimed was in Warsaw. A friend informs him it's actually in New York, prompting Georg to fly to America in search of her and to uncover the truth. Once there, he realizes he’s caught in a dangerous game between the CIA and KGB, far beyond his understanding. He questions his loyalties, the true identity of Mr. Bulnakov, and whether he ever truly knew Francoise.
