This is a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. A novel charged throughtout with a sense of the fragility of our lives. Kathy, Ruth and Tommy were pupils at Hailsham - situated deep in the English countryside. The children were tenderly sheltered from the outside world, brought up to believe they were special and that their personal welfare was crucial. But for what reason were they really there?

Disturbing read. A special school in a world so similar, yet different, or? A young woman remembers her past, her friends and relations. Her school days. It's not a normal school. The fate of the students is dire. But never is anything questioned. That things have to be this particular way. This makes this a horrific vision. It's very different from the common YA dystopian novels, where coming of age is tied to questioning the way of things, with the option of resistance or escape. There's no resistance or escape here.
