Climate change will significantly impact the preservation of historical gardens, raising various issues related to natural science, art history, economics, and gardening. Key topics include future climate scenarios for heritage gardens, ecologically based management strategies, adaptation of woody vegetation, and historical knowledge of calamities. The research project, funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), focuses on the management of woody vegetation in heritage gardens amid climate change, particularly within the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG). A transdisciplinary approach was adopted to comprehensively address the subject using diverse methods, from applied and basic research to practical knowledge analysis. This publication compiles the expertise gained over three years, identifying necessary approaches and presenting strategies for climate change-adapted heritage gardens. It aims to guide practitioners in effectively managing woody vegetation in these historical spaces, ensuring their preservation in the face of evolving environmental challenges.
