Growing up in an art-conscious home, influenced by my grandfather, a renowned landscape artist, I was surrounded by beautiful paintings, including striking portraits of my great-grandparents. This artistic environment sparked my interest in photography, leading me to take my first self-portrait with a 35 mm camera in 1954. Since then, photography has been a constant in my life. Over sixty-four years, I have captured more than four hundred human faces, primarily those of family and friends. My career as a geologist took me on extensive travels worldwide, where I encountered a diverse array of people, predominantly in rural settings like farms and fishing villages, rather than urban environments. Through my lens, I've aimed to express the unique character of each face, recognizing their individuality. While I experimented with various camera models and film types in analogue photography, I transitioned to digital photography in 2014, embracing its vast possibilities, particularly using a monochrome Leica. Despite this shift, I have remained committed to one classic tool: the tripod, which continues to play a vital role in my photographic practice.
