Anna Jermolaewa (b. 1970, St. Petersburg; lives and works in Vienna) is a keen observer of human communities, exploring their social and political contexts. Her art often highlights seemingly insignificant aspects of the human condition, examined through a critical yet humorous lens shaped by her experiences as a traveler. Jermolaewa's diverse body of work includes videos, photographs, drawings, and expansive installations. The Schlossmuseum Linz hosts the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. As a cofounder of the first opposition party in the Soviet Union and a coeditor of a regime-critical magazine, she fled her homeland, received political asylum in Austria, and has served as a professor of experimental design at the University of Art and Design Linz since 2019. In 2024, she will represent Austria at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition catalogue features significant works from the past twenty-five years alongside new pieces created for this event, focusing on independence movements in the Baltic countries. Essays by Silvia Eiblmayr, Robert Pfaller, Claus Philipp, and Anna Tolstova delve into the performative aspects, self-portraits, and the interplay of everyday life and political themes in Jermolaewa's work.
