Complementary to scattering techniques, scanning tunnelling microscopy provides atomic-scale real space information about a material's electronic state of matter. State-of-the-art designs of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) allow measurements at millikelvin temperatures with unprecedented energy resolution.
