The Fritz Thyssen Foundation continues its tradition with the “Thyssen Lectures,” initiated in Germany in 1979 and expanded to various universities in the Czech Republic, Israel, Russia, and Turkey. In Greece, the series will unfold over four years under Prof. Vassilios Skouris, former President of the European Court of Justice and current Director of the Centre of International and European Economic Law (CIELL). The focus is on “the EU as a community of European law and values.” The principle of democracy, while serving as the foundation for state power globally, faces significant threats. Authoritarian regimes like Russia, China, and Turkey exhibit increasing power concentration, while even established democracies encounter serious challenges. The internationalization of decision-making, once seen as progress, is now criticized as “undemocratic.” Additionally, reliance on expert knowledge raises concerns, and countering populist trends proves difficult. These issues prompt a critical examination of what new principles may be necessary for democratic governance in the 21st century.
