Tunable focus lenses have been in development for decades, yet their presence in commercial and consumer applications remains minimal. In contrast, these lenses are effectively utilized in controlled lab environments, where closed-loop focal power control and operating conditions are less critical. This thesis focuses on developing tunable lenses that address these concerns. We explored closed-loop control and reliable operating conditions for two types of piezo-actuated fluid-membrane lenses: a flexible silicone membrane lens and a stiffer glass membrane lens. The glass membrane lens demonstrated superior performance and resilience to varying operating conditions. We further enhanced its functionalities to correct chromatic and monochromatic aberrations. For chromatic aberration, we created tunable doublets by combining two glass membrane lenses filled with different dispersion fluids. To address monochromatic aberrations, we segmented the actuator's electrode to enable non-rotational symmetries in membrane deformation. Additionally, we devised two innovative design approaches for tunable lenses, achieving a high aperture with a minimal footprint. The tunable lenses developed in this thesis show promising potential for implementation in both consumer and industrial products.
