Youth unemployment and social exclusion

Mehr zum Buch

This volume focuses on social exclusion related to unemployment, particularly among vulnerable young unemployed individuals across six European countries. It stems from an international research project (YUSEDER) under the European Commission's Targeted Socio-Economic Research (TSER) program. Researchers from diverse fields, including health psychology, public health, psychiatry, industrial sociology, and medical sociology, collaborated on this study. Social exclusion has become a significant topic in European policy discussions, as barriers to entering the labor market increase the risk of social exclusion for youth, impacting the broader social fabric. The contributions explore theoretical reflections on the meaning and scope of social exclusion for young unemployed individuals from a comparative perspective. Research was conducted in three Northern European countries (Sweden, Germany, Belgium) and three Southern European countries (Spain, Italy, Greece), with specific national reports for each. The comparative section analyzes similarities and differences among countries with varying historical and social contexts regarding youth marginalization. This work aims to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by young unemployed individuals and the implications of social exclusion across different European settings.
