The novel consists of a series of episodes from the lives of educators and students at a private eight-year high school in Prague. The school principal, thirty-five-year-old Tomáš, increasingly succumbs to disillusionment both at home and work. He faces constant reproaches and arguments with his neurotic wife, who is on maternity leave with their two children. He must compromise on his principles and ideas about an ideal educational institution, struggles to secure funding, and encounters bureaucratic officials as well as misunderstandings from some colleagues. Despite these obstacles, he advocates for unconventional teaching methods and informal relationships with students. He is tolerant, understands their problems, and even defends a few seventh-graders who belong to a group of graffiti artists. They reject the adult world, its lifestyle, and values, finding in graffiti not only an exciting adventure but also a means of expressing their identity and a form of protest. The author attempts to address current issues in youth education, though his perspective may not be entirely convincing. The text features dialogues written in colloquial language, often including vulgarities and slang.
