Without the ability to measure longitude the great age of exploration was marked by the number of sailors lost at sea as soon as they lost sight of land. The 'longitude problem' had defeated both Galileo and Newton. In 1714 Parliament offered a reward to anyone whose method proved successful. Only one man tried a mechanical solution - a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock could yet do on land.
