Born into a prominent Perthshire family with Jacobite and Hanoverian ties, George Murray's military career began in 1790 when he joined the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards. He distinguished himself in campaigns against Revolutionary France and Napoleon, serving in the Low Countries and Ireland, and later participating in the successful Egyptian campaign under General Abercromby. As a 'Scientific' officer, he devised strategies for capturing West Indian islands from the French and gained recognition during the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, where he first collaborated with Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington. Murray's diplomatic mission to Sweden showcased his growing reputation, and upon returning, he faced the challenges of the Convention of Cintra in Portugal. He became increasingly aware of the flaws in the leadership around him, including Wellington, while contributing to military planning during the brutal retreat to Corunna. Appointed Wellesley's Quartermaster General, he played a crucial role in significant battles in the Peninsula and was instrumental in the construction of the Lines of Torres Vedras. After a brief return home, he rejoined Wellington's forces, helping to drive the French back in 1813. His leadership expanded the QMG's role, and he later commanded in Canada during the War of 1812.
