Americanism, centered on freedom and democracy, and Zionism, aimed at establishing a democratic Jewish state, emerged as the most successful ideologies of the twentieth century. Their adversaries—communism, fascism, and antisemitism—resulted in the deaths of millions. Yet, the contributions of some key figures in these movements remain underappreciated. This work highlights eight individuals, four from Europe and four from America, whose lives exemplify the intellectual and social revolutions sparked by Americanism and Zionism. Among them are Theodor Herzl in Vienna, Ben Hecht in New York, Golda Meir in Evian, and Vladimir Jabotinsky in London. It recounts Chaim Weizmann's interactions with Emir Faisal and Lawrence of Arabia during World War I, Abba Eban's notable UN address shortly after Israel's founding, Louis D. Brandeis' influential Zionist speech in 1915, and Benjamin Netanyahu's congressional address a century later, facilitated by Israel's American-born ambassador, Ron Dermer. These compelling narratives not only hold historical significance but also underscore the ongoing struggle between freedom and its adversaries, as both Americanism and Zionism confront new threats from totalitarian forces in the twenty-first century. Remembering this history is vital for honoring the past and shaping the future.
