As the oldest university in Uganda and a significant institution in eastern and central Africa, Makerere University plays a crucial role in the history of higher education on the continent. It has produced numerous influential figures, drawing both scholarly and popular interest for its achievements and shortcomings. This book delves into an often-overlooked aspect of higher education in Africa: the interplay between a historically significant public university and the democratization struggles occurring both on campus and beyond.
