In 1940, Mrs. Mudge, the cleaning lady, discovers a corpse in the ticket office of the Little Theatre in Lulverton, stabbed with a dagger from the society's latest play, Measure for Measure. The story unfolds in two sections. The first part, narrated by Vaughn Tudor, details the formation of a small amateur theatre group in a sleepy village on the South Coast before World War II. The second half reveals the victim's identity and introduces Inspector Charlton, who is called to investigate the murder. As the police delve into the complex web of relationships surrounding the theatre, they uncover numerous individuals who had motives to be there that fateful night. The narrative is inspired by a real production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure that Witting attended in May 1939. First published in 1941, this novel is the fifth in Witting's 30-year writing career, showcasing his exceptional plot development and characterisation. The author, who passed away in 1968, completed 12 books in total. This work is part of Galileo's reissue series, following the successful release of Catt out of the Bag in October 2021, which garnered praise from Golden Age crime fiction enthusiasts. The second reissue, Murder in Blue, is set for release in Autumn 2021.
