During the Second World War, a group of Polish diplomats in Bern, led by envoy Aleksander Ładoś, collaborated with Jewish organizations to rescue Jews from the Holocaust. From early 1941 to late 1943, they illegally acquired and issued passports and citizenship certificates from Paraguay, Honduras, Haiti, and Peru. These documents were crucial for individuals facing death, protecting them from deportation to Nazi death camps. The Ładoś Group is estimated to have issued between 4,000 and 5,000 documents, potentially benefiting up to 10,000 people. This publication is the first attempt to compile a comprehensive list of those who received these documents, currently documenting 3,253 individuals, some of whom survived, others perished, and many whose fates remain unknown. The list is accompanied by a detailed account of the Ładoś Group's efforts, the methods employed, and preliminary statistical analysis. Research was conducted by the Polish Embassy in Bern, in collaboration with the Pilecki Institute and supported by various institutions, including the Jewish Historical Institute and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. This remarkable volume reproduces the list and explores its origins, significance, and the methodology behind its analysis.
