Improvisations on the road, on tour. Being on the road often leaves little time for preparing large canvases or starting oil paintings. Instead, artists use what’s available—paper, cardboard, an empty cigar box, pens, felts, brushes, and ink. This necessity leads to improvisation, which is central to the works presented here and to Brötzmann's life. His art has always existed, predating his identity as "Machine Gun." Initially, it supported his designs, evolving into a remarkable collection of record covers, posters, and fliers over the past 50+ years. Brötzmann's visual art can be created anywhere, focusing on rediscovering lost elements and recombining them into new forms. He can transform simple materials—a few crayons and discarded paper—into vibrant representations of concepts like "Home" (a cup, a house) and "Away" (a ship, a landscape). These small yet impactful creations reveal overlooked potentialities in our surroundings, encouraging us to notice what we often disregard. Contributions from various authors enrich this exploration of Brötzmann's improvisational artistry.
