This volume features a selection of papers presented at the fifth edition of the International Conference on Orient in Literature (OLLO), held from 28 to 29 March 2019 at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun. It includes 20 articles that explore a diverse array of perspectives and approaches, arranged alphabetically to reflect the variety of material and depth of analysis. Most contributions focus on contemporary literature from the mid-19th century to the present, highlighting writers from various African countries (Egypt, Nigeria, Somalia) and Asian regions (Kuwait, Qatar, Iranian Azerbaijan, India, China, Japan). Only two articles examine ancient and early medieval texts, specifically the Indian epic Mahabharata and Arabic poetry. Four articles investigate the perception and representation of the Orient through Western lenses, with one dedicated to film material. Generally, these contributions reveal how their sources perpetuate stereotypical and distorted images of the Orient, echoing themes from Edward Said's influential work and contemporary postcolonial studies on (Neo-)Orientalism and Othering. Notably, even individuals like the wife of a French colonial servant in Morocco and Polish travelers, despite Poland's non-colonial status, adopted a clichéd, dichotomous worldview.
