The following pages do not aim to focus on the superficial characteristics of Crivelli, which are evident to anyone familiar with his typical works, such as those in the National Gallery. His affinity for gold and splendid accessories, precise outlines, and anatomical forms, along with the religious seriousness and gentle grace of his figures, are aspects of his art that are clear to those who take more than a cursory look. These traits have been acknowledged by previous writers. In today's context, the oldest Italian painters' forms and methods have become familiar, reducing the likelihood of Crivelli's art being dismissed as wooden or grotesque. Instead, we will examine his art from a historical perspective, seeking to uncover the stages of development reflected in his works. Notably, Crivelli's subjects include small half-length "Madonnas," likely created for private patrons, while his more typical works are large anconas with several panels—generally ten, sometimes including a predella—intended for churches.
