Filip Orlik (1672–1742) was a prominent Cossack hetman and close associate of Ivan Mazepa, serving as the general secretary of the Zaporozhian army. After the defeat of the Swedish and allied Cossack forces at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, both sought refuge in the Ottoman Empire. Following Mazepa's death, Orlik was elected hetman on April 16, 1710, by the Cossack elders and army, adopting the Constitution of Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporozhian Army, which defined the Ukrainian state's boundaries, territory, nationhood, finances, judiciary, and religion. During the Russo-Turkish War (1710–1711), he fought in Ukraine but ultimately retreated to Ottoman territory. He held high hopes for support from Poland, especially after the marriage of Stanisław Leszczyński's daughter to King Louis XV of France. Throughout his life, Orlik sought European backing for Ukraine's independence, passing away in Jassy in 1742. The original of his Diary, covering 1720–1732, is housed in the French Diplomatic Archives. This edition presents a manuscript segment from 1725–1726, marking the first Polish publication of this historical source, allowing readers to explore the cultural context of the hetman and his efforts for Ukraine's freedom, where he is celebrated as a national hero. For modern Poles, Orlik represents an exceptional figure from the elite of the First Republic.
