Struggling with his identity as an outsider, Sonny feels alienated from both the Moscondagas on the Reservation and the white community. He channels his anger, referred to as "the monster," through boxing. Determined to escape the confines of the Reservation, Sonny sets his sights on New York City, seeking freedom and the chance to define himself on his own terms.
