Economic Liberalization and Authoritarianism

Focusing on the interplay between economic liberalization and authoritarianism, this book explores why MENA countries have not transitioned to democracy despite significant economic reforms. Christian Neugebauer conducts a comparative case study of Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, and Morocco, analyzing the impact of consumer-price liberalization and privatization on regime stability from the 1950s to the Arab Spring in 2011. His findings challenge prevailing assumptions about the destabilizing effects of economic liberalization on authoritarian regimes in the region.
