V Němém křiku se autorka zaměřuje na téma odlišnosti a vyloučení ze společnosti a ukazuje, jak to dopadá na konkrétní lidi. V tomhle případě jde hlavně o dětské domovy a tělesná omezení. V dalších knihách pak rozvíjí jiné motivy, ale právě tahle citlivá témata jí určitě pomohla k úspěchu.
