When John Rothenstein, Director of the Tate Gallery, published the third volume of his 'Modern English Painters' in 1984, he subtitled it 'Hennell to Hockney'. While David Hockney is well-known, Thomas Hennell (1903-1945) remains less recognized, despite being considered one of Britain's most significant watercolourists at the time of his death. Hennell faced serious mental illness, diagnosed as schizophrenic, and spent several years in different mental hospitals, including the Maudsley. Encouraged by Edward Bawden to express his experiences, Hennell published the illustrated account 'The Witnesses' in 1938. He also received support from Eric Ravilious, who illustrated 'The Poems of Thomas Hennell' in 1936. At the onset of World War II, Hennell offered his services as an artist to the War Artists' Advisory Committee and became a full-time salaried war artist in 1943. He served in Europe and the Far East, ultimately being captured by Indonesian nationalist fighters in Java in November 1945, and was presumed killed shortly thereafter. Hennell's paintings and drawings reflect his era and will resonate with those interested in the countryside, farming, the Second World War, and those who admire the artists he called friends.
