During the summer of 1955, death arrived in town, prompting reporters to swarm the area. Some gathered fleeting details before leaving, while others lingered for the unfolding story. The first body lay concealed in a field of dandelions, grass, weeds, and volunteer corn, hidden like a bug crushed into dough. The earth, more accommodating than dough, absorbed the offering before scavengers could claim it. Nearby, a herd of cows moved to a distant part of their familiar terrain, their caretaker—a human who provided hay and treats—soon to be just a memory. At this moment, the body remained undiscovered, unnoticed by birds, animals, onlookers, or police. It was simply a corpse, partially buried in the field, awaiting recognition in a summer marked by the shadow of death.
