From the rise of the Pan-Maya Movement in Guatemala and the Zapatista uprising in Mexico to the Water and Gas Wars in Bolivia and the Idle No More movement in Canada, the early twenty-first century has seen a significant increase in Indigenous political action and a wealth of texts by Native authors and poets. Across the Americas—referred to as Abiayala, or the “Land of Plenitude and Maturity” in the Guna language—Indigenous voices are asserting their right to self-representation in both politics and creative writing. This exploration delves into the connections between Indigenous literature and social movements over the past thirty years, focusing on the concept of insurgent poetics. The author examines the intertwined nature of these literary and political phenomena, which often emerge simultaneously in diverse contexts. Literature serves as a crucial tool in political struggles, making marginalized knowledge visible and envisioning alternatives to modernity and coloniality. The rise of Indigenous literature and activism is one of the most significant developments of the twenty-first century, yet it remains underexplored. This work aims to address that gap, using the idea of Abiayala as a foundation for rethinking inter-American studies through the lens of Indigenous sovereignty.
