In his opening chapter, Sir James Douie highlights that the area covered in this volume—approximately a quarter of a million square miles—can be compared to Austria-Hungary in terms of ethnography, linguistics, and physical geography. While the political unity of the region is temporary and imposed by ruling classes, the term Punjábi more accurately represents the diverse peoples of the Panjáb, North-West Frontier Province, Kashmír, and smaller Native States. This includes Sikh, Muhammadan, and Hindu Jats, as well as Kashmírís and Rájputs, all of whom belong to the Indo-Aryan stock, blending with Turko-Iranian groups and influenced by Mongoloid tribes in the northern hill districts. Despite the political divisions, the geographical unit remains distinct. Sir James Douie reflects on the rewarding thirty-five years he spent serving North-West India, sharing personal recollections of the region's physiography, flora, fauna, and administration.
