On March 14, 1701, Asano Takuminokami Naganori, the feudal lord of Banshu Ako domain (in present-day Hyogo Prefecture), drew his sword and lunged at Kira Kozukenosuke Yoshinaka, the shogunate's court-protocol expert, at Edo Castle.
