Outside of Indonesia, the country's writers and their works remain largely unknown. The annual Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF), since its inception in 2004, has aimed to change this by bringing over 350 Indonesian authors to Ubud, alongside international counterparts. UWRF is dedicated to showcasing both established and emerging Indonesian writers to a global audience. This collection offers a glimpse into the literary contributions of emerging authors who have participated in the festival, revealing the complexities of a nation often misunderstood. The stories and poems included reflect the diverse cultures, languages, and religions of Indonesia, from Sumatra to Papua, united by the powerful voice of human expression. Editors John McGlynn and Laura Noszlopy have curated works from a variety of authors such as Adek Dedees, Amanche Franck OE Ninu, and Benazir Nafilah, among others. Each piece contributes to a deeper understanding of Indonesia's rich cultural tapestry, encompassing themes of hardship, heartbreak, conflict, and peace. This anthology serves as an introduction to the vibrant literary scene emerging from one of the world’s most enigmatic nations.
